What is a second life battery (SLB)?

Second life batteries (SLBs), also referred to as retired or repurposed batteries, are lithium-ion batteries that have reached the end of their primary use in applications such as electric vehicles and renewable energy systems (Zhu et al., 2021a).

What is Second Life EV battery?

Phase 2 (Second life): When the capacity retention rate is lower than 80%, the power battery must be retired but can be utilized for energy storage. By second life utilization, the overall lifetime of EV batteries can be maximized. It can be seen that the second life stage is a relatively long duration in the whole lifetime of an EV battery.

Can batteries be repurposed in a second life application?

While there are options for reusing batteries in second life applications, there will ultimately be the need to recycle them. There are four main recycling methods that are actively being researched or in use in industry: (i) pyrometallurgy, (ii) hydrometallurgy, (iii) biometallurgy and (iv) direct recycling.

What happens if you sell a battery for a second-life use?

Owners of retired batteries and cells also face significant costs and risks when disposing of or selling batteries for second-life use. Contracts can take months to finalize, and shipping costs (both domestic and international) are substantial.
