Is glass a conductor of electricity?

Insulating glass becomes a conductor of electricity when heated red-hot with a blowtorch. (m) (T+) At room temerature, glass is almost as good an insulator as hard rubber. When heated to 1000 K, however, glass has a resistivity of less Insulating glass becomes a conductor of electricity when heated red-hot with a blowtorch. (m) (T+)

Is glass a conductor or insulator?

It depends on its temperature. Under 20C it is an insulator and non-conductor of electricity. When the temperature of glass increases it becomes a softer and better conductor. Though in a cold state it is an insulator. When it is hot, a part of the glass material turns into liquid.

Why is heated glass a conductor of electricity?

Continuous heat melts the glass and produces molten fluid-like material. The charges of this softened or molten glass have the ability to move freely and carry electric current from one place to another. When further heat is supplied, the ions move more rapidly. That’s why heated glass is the conductor of electricity.

Why is glass a bad conductor?

It also means glass isn’t a good conductor for carrying electricity—it would take too much energy to make the electrons move freely enough to create an electric current. And not only electricity! Glass is also quite poor thermal conductor, meaning it does not absorb and transfer heat very easily.
