What is a two-level voltage inverter?

The currently most widely used topology in vehicles is a two-level voltage inverter. Figure 1 (a) shows this topology for one phase. The two-level topology allows the output voltage relative to the neutral point N to switch between the two voltage levels, positive half and negative half DC link voltage (uAN = Udc ⁄2 and uAN =- Udc ⁄2).
