What is a substation room?

A substation is a room where electrical equipment is housed and operated. The design of a substation room must take into account many factors, including safety, space, and ventilation. When designing a substation room, safety is the top priority. All electrical equipment must be properly grounded and enclosed to prevent accidental electrocution.

What are the design requirements for a substation?

The guideline covers basic design requirements for associated architectural, mechanical and electrical systems. Separate the room from occupied spaces or provide sound-proofing so the 60 Hz hum is not audible to occupants (sound level of 40dB or less) in adjacent areas, including those rooms above and below the substation room.

How to design a two-floor substation?

In a two-floor substation arrangement, the transformer should be on the bottom level & the power distribution room on second floor must contain lifting holes and a platform. When designing a substation, the control room, duty room, & auxiliary room must be easily accessible to operational staff.

Where should a substation be located?

It is advisable to place the substation in a distinct utility building, and it might be positioned next to the generator room, if one exists. Avoid locating the substation in the basement whenever feasible. If a building has only one basement, the substation/switch room should not be located in the basement.
